The Southwest Quantum Information and Technology (SQuInT) Network announces the Third Biannual SQuInT Student Summer School and Retreat, to be held at the beautiful Asilomar State Park near Monterey, California from June 15-19, 2003, co-hosted by the University of California, Berkeley, University of California, San Diego, and the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque.

The Retreat is an educational activity, with pedagogical and overview lectures geared towards newcomers to the field. In addition, it is intended to provide an opportunity for new students in the field to become acquainted with their peers from other research groups and to establish grass roots connections between the increasing number of research groups active in this field -- hence the name: Summer School and Retreat.

This year's retreat will emphasize computer science and engineering.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Quantum complexity and algorithms.
  • Quantum communication.
  • Quantum error correction and control.
  • Laboratory implementations in atomic and solid-state systems.

Registration will be limited to 50 attendees, new to studies in quantum information science and technology. To initiate the process, complete and submit the online form. Registration is completed by submitting the fee, $300, by check, payable to the University of New Mexico to the address below. The fee includes housing the evenings of 15-18 June, all meals, and materials.

The deadline for completing registration was April 22, 2003. People who want to get on a waiting list should contact Prof. K. Birgitta Whaley.

Retreat administration is being handled by Ms. Betty Fry.
